Angel - Daytona Beach, Florida
Plea goes out on 8/7/01
About three months ago there was a tornado that came through Daytona Beach during the middle of the day. It wasn't particularly bad but did a good deal of damage in a limited area. Unfortunately, it hit Angels house. Angel's lifelong canine companion was killed in the tornado.
The Insurance Adjuster came out to survey damage and recommend settlement amount and in his report back to the insurance company he was nice enough to report that the Insured had a Rottweiler on premises. The nice insurance company threatened to cancel him because he had the dog and when you call around to try to get insurance replaced they ask you why you are moving your insurance and when you tell them, they won't take you either. Then of course when you have no insurance you've got a mortgage problem.
This gentleman that looks like he squeaks by himself but loves this dog and has tried everything he could to find another place for her knew the only thing he could do was take her to the humane society and hope that someone would find it in their heart to adopt her. He had the option of signing her over for euthanasia but he refused, he wanted her to have at least the three days. He said she'd been too good a friend he couldn't do that.
In a scene that would pull at your heart like the movie Ole Yeller, he turned and looked back at this friend of eight years, and most folks don't look back, he said "You be a good girl...old friend". She looked at him puzzled but then a look of certainty came over her as she watched him leave and she knew this was what had to be done and she turned to look at the very kind shelter worker, Tamara, that was going to take her back to what will probably be her last stop in a concrete run. She didn't hesitate but accepted her fate.
8/9/01 Well, unforuntate news today, Angel has heartworms. The odds are stacked even greater against her now.
8/10/01 The response to Angel's story has been tremendous, Sheena Watson and her sister Janice from Cleo's Rottie Rescue in Pensacola are going to take Angel in and a donor, Carol, is going to pay for her heartworm treatment. A gentleman in Georgia has even offered to adopt her.
Today I went to tell Angel she had a new lease on life. We took a leisurely walk and sat in the shade as I told her of all the people that wanted to help a sweet "Angel" get a second chance at life. Then she let me bathe her as she stood on the sidewalk, she never fussed, she never attempted to leave, she enjoyed the attention. Angel is the perfect name for her.
I can't tell you what a great shelter we have in Halifax Humane Society and although space is at a premium they were willing to work with me (within reason) to get her out and as always showed tremendous patience and kindness. Everyone was thilled that Angel is getting this chance.
Halifax Humane Society, Angel and I want to thank everyone associated with rescuing all these wonderful souls. Angel and all her new found friends give me so much hope. I would like to especially thank Sheena, Janice, Karla from Southern States Rottweiler Rescue, Terre and Terri for transport, Ellen, Cindy and Kathy and everybody that offered help and prayers for this gal.
Angel starts her journey this afternoon!
